Thlogo mansfielde Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation in coordination with the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and the Japan-America Society of Minnesota presents a symposium on:

Addressing Challenges in Northeast Asia: Lessons from the “Mansfield Way”

Mike Mansfield played a pivotal role in key domestic and international issues of the 20th century as U.S. congressman from Montana, U.S. Senate majority leader, and U.S. ambassador to Japan from 1977 to early 1989. On October 30, the Mansfield Foundation will convene a panel of Mike Mansfield’s friends and former colleagues to share their recollections of Ambassador Mansfield and relate how his example inspired their own efforts to promote cooperation between the United States and Asia. This symposium will examine current challenges in Northeast Asia – the rise of China, North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, lingering historical animosities – and share crucial lessons from Ambassador Mansfield in both politics and international affairs, especially his conviction that there is always something to be gained from listening to others.

The panel will include former Vice President Walter Mondale, who followed Mike Mansfield as U.S. Ambassador to Japan from 1993-1996, Rust Deming, who served as Deputy Chief of Mission to Ambassador Mondale at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, and Charles Ferris, who was chief counsel to Mike Mansfield during his tenure as U.S. Senate majority leader.

  • Walter F. Mondale Chairman Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation International Advisory Board, and former Vice President of the United States and U.S. Ambassador to Japan
  • Rust M. Deming, Adjunct Professor, Johns Hopkins School of International Studies
