20th Annual Mondale Award and Scholarship Gala 2017

JASM is very pleased to announce the 20th Mondale Award and Scholarship Gala 2017 taking place at the Oak Ridge Country Club in Hopkins on Saturday, October 28, 2017.

This year’s keynote speaker is U.S. Senator Al Franken, who is a native of St. Louis Park, Harvard Graduate, comedy writer, and, since 2008, a United States Senator for Minnesota. In the Senate, he has worked to improve the lives of those in the middle class, and those striving to get into the middle class by focusing on education, health care, agriculture, and training workers for 21st Century jobs.  He’s also pressed to address
Al_Franken_Senate global climate change, safeguard Americans’ privacy in a time of fast-moving technological advances, and he’s worked to rein in Wall Street excesses that hurt middle class families.

He will discuss his work and the importance of building bridges – not walls – between the United States and its important allies, like Japan.

During the event, the Mondale Award for Japan-Minnesota Partnership will be presented by Ambassador Walter Mondale. The 2017 Mondale Award winner will be announced on Friday, September 29, 2017 on the JASM website. The Mondale Award recognizes outstanding contributions to the building of understanding, cooperation, and respect between the people of Japan and Minnesota.

Recipients of the Mondale Scholarships will be also announced at the Gala. The Mondale Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students enrolled in Minnesota colleges and universities who want to broaden their knowledge of Japan through a combination of study and travel.

The Mondale Gala will feature a Silent and Live Auction to raise funds for the Mondale Scholarship Program. Proceeds from this fundraising event will enable JASM to continue to offer social and educational programs that promote cultural exchange between Minnesota and Japan.

The 2017 Mondale Award for Japan—Minnesota Partnership

Mondale Award 2017 JASM is delighted to announce the 2017 Mondale Award for Japan—Minnesota Partnership will be presented to Mirja Hanson at the Mondale Award and Scholarship Gala.

Dr. Mirja Hanson, past President of JASM, and most recently the Honorary Consul General of Japan at Minneapolis, was raised in Japan where her parents, Pentti and Pirkko Karikoski, were missionaries for 34 years.
Mirja has worked in community and organizational development, serving as a consultant, facilitator and trainer for 42 years. Passionate about U.S.—Japan relationship building, Mirja advocated for the Japan—Minnesota relationship by serving on the Board of JASM, 1982-1997, and then was President from 1992 to 1996. It was during that time that she led JASM through critical organizational changes, such as hiring an executive director, creating the JASM logo, and producing the bilingual guide to living in Minnesota. Mirja also reached out to the business community, and events with a business focus were organized to “complement cultural activities”.
Mirja continues to serve the Japan related community in Minnesota by volunteering and facilitating cultural and planning activities for organizations such as JASM and the Saint Paul—Nagasaki Sister City Committee. JASM is very pleased to present the Mondale Award for Japan-Minnesota Partnership to Mirja Hanson in 2017.
