Welcome to the Japan America Society of Minnesota

Mission Statement

Our member supported, non-profit, non-political association is dedicated to bringing the peoples of Japan and the United States closer together in mutual understanding, respect, and cooperation. Through programs and interchange, we endeavor to promote an appreciation of cultural, educational, economic, public, and other affairs of interest to both peoples.

Membership in the society is open to individuals, corporations, and other organizations interested in furthering its programs. Supporting business relationships and providing a place where individuals can engage in Japanese cultural events is a driving force in JASM.

Founded in 1972, JASM is a member of the National Association of Japan-America Societies.

    Description: As a part of the Japan America Society of Minnesota, we are organizing a time and place for people to be able to get together and practice Japanese language with their peers.

    There is no charge for these meetings; all that is required is knowledge of the Japanese language! Any level of proficiency is welcome. This group is meant for people to practice the Japanese language in a fun, open, and free environment. We will meet every Saturday around 3:00 pm at the Espresso Royale Cafe in downtown Minneapolis. Hope you can stop by!

    We are having a pot luck party the 2nd Monday of every month at noon. You can mix Japanese people who are living in Minnesota.

  • JASM Professional Group Meeting

    Description: This year’s first JASM Professional Group meeting will be held on April 15th!
    The JASM Professionals Group — put on by JASM’s Young Professionals Group Committee — provides networking opportunities primarily for business professionals at social events. Here, fellow professionals can tell stories about their experiences in Japan as well as share interests in the culture and society both from a personal and professional perspective. Meetings are currently scheduled to take place every other month at a Japanese restaurant. This also provides an opportunity to try different Japanese restaurants in the Twin Cities area and for interested members to find out more about the JASM mission and activities in the community.

    Date: Wednesday, April 15th, 2015; from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

    Location: Zen Box Izakaya; 602 South Washington Ave Minneapolis, MN 55415

    Cost: Free for JASM members, $5 for Non-Members

    If you join JASM prior to or at this event, we will waive the non-member fee!

    Attendees are encouraged to purchase their own food and drink at the restaurant.

    Mr. Haruhiko Kuroda was appointed the 31st Governor of the Bank of Japan on March 20, 2013.

    He started his career at the Ministry of Finance in Japan in 1967. In the early years, he was seconded to the International Monetary Fund as Advisor to the Executive Director. His responsibilities at the Ministry encompassed fields such as international finance and national and international tax as well as services in the finance minister’s office including as secretary to the then Finance Minister Murayama. He represented the Ministry at a number of international monetary conferences as Vice Minister of Finance for International Affairs, including meetings of the Group of Seven Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors, International Monetary Fund/World Bank Joint Annual Meetings, and bilateral meetings between Japan and other countries/regions.

    From 2003, he served as Special Advisor to the Cabinet of Prime Minister Koizumi, while teaching economics and finance as Professor at the Graduate School of Economics of Hitotsubashi University.

    His previous position was President of the Asian Development Bank. He took office in February 2005, and in the eight years of his tenure he contributed to the reforms of the institution by formulating a long-term strategy and strengthening its financial resources.

    Born in October 1944, he holds a Bachelor of Arts in Law from The University of Tokyo (1967), and a Master of Philosophy in Economics from University of Oxford (1971).
