This year marks the 100th anniversary of the giving of the trees, a gift of 3000 sakura trees presented by Japan to the United States and planted in Washington D.C. It is the only other major gift presented to our nation by another country, other than the Statue of Liberty. In celebration of this historic event and the enduring relationship between our two countries, Japan is once more gifting the United States with this beautiful and iconic tree, this time by planting 20 trees each to 20 cities across the nation. Two Minnesota cities – St.Paul and Winona – have been chosen for this event.

Everyone is invited to come out and witness the planting of the sakura trees on Saturday, June 9th from 9:00-10:30am at Como Ordway Park. The event will include performances by the Sansei Yonsei Kai dancers, shakuhachi musician Leo Hansen, and opportunities for everyone to partake in the festivities. The Mayor of St. Paul and other Minnesota leaders will join a delegation from the Consulate General of Japan in Chicago for the event.

‘The Sakura Centennial is a collaborative effort between JASM, the St. Paul Nagasaki Sister City Committee, and Marja P. Hanson, Honorary Consul General of Japan.

Rent-a-Cat tells the quirky story of a lonely woman who rents cats to others who are in temporary need of an emotional lift. Sayoko walks up and down the city streets with a cart full of cats and a megaphone shouting “Cats for rent!” While Sayoko’s able to help her customers fill that emotional void, she still longs for a more meaningful relationship than the one she has with her hoard of cats, filling all the empty space in her apartment. The cute, sweet Sayoko and the film’s unconventional sense of humor are the highlights of this Japanese comedy.

Naoko Ogigami has directed five films prior to Rent-a-Cat, including 2007’s Glasses, which screened at both the Berlin International Film Festival and the Sundance Film Festival. Rent-a-Cat premiered at the Berlin Film Festival.
