“Hands-on Humanitarian Service in Japan: The Experience of the Minnesota Naval Reserve and Medical Team International”

As the far reaching effects of the Great East Japan Earthquake continue, you are invited to a special program to acknowledge and honor two Minnesota-linked organizations that have participated in on-the-ground relief missions in the Tohoku Region:
東北地方太平洋沖地震の影響が続いていることに伴い、東北地方で救援活動を行ったミネソタに関係する２つの団体を称えるイベントを開催します。
* U.S. Navy: Captain Jeff Davis and Captain Brad Gawboy will report on the experience of the Minnesota Naval Reserves Unit and their participation in Operation Tomodachi, the Japan disaster relief effort of the U.S. Navy.
* 米国海軍：ジェフ・デイビス大尉とブラッド・ガーボーイ大尉がミネソタ海軍予備員、ともだち作戦への参加、災害救済活動についての報告をします。
* Medical Teams International: Mr. Bas Vanderzalm, President of Medical Teams International will share the work of Medical Teams International volunteers that provided on-the-ground assistance in partnership with Christian humanitarian aid organizations in Japan. Mr. Vanderzalm has worked for over 35 years with Christian organizations committed to providing humanitarian aid around the globe.
* 国際医療チーム：国際医療チームの会長であるバス・ヴァンダーザルム氏が、日本キリスト教人道支援団体と行った現地でのボランティア活動についてお話しします。ヴァンダーザルム 氏は世界中で人道支援活動を行っているキリスト教団体と35年以上共に働いています。

Donate to the Japan Earthquake & Pacific Tsunami Disaster Relief
The Japan America Society of Minnesota has been receiving a large number of inquires on how individuals can assist with the Japan relief effort. We have been surprised by this large out pouring of support and wish to update our members and friends on how they can show their support.
Organizations to Donate To
- American Red Cross – Donations made specifically to the American Red Cross’s Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief Fund will be transferred directly to the Japanese Red Cross
- Japanese Red Cross Society – 100% goes to Japan but there is no control where in the disaster zone it goes. Go to the website and put the amount in YEN for Japanese Red Cross and continue. Currently, the conversion is about $1 = 80 Yen. (e.g. $20 = 1600 Yen, $100 = 8,000 Yen) You can pay with a credit card via Google Checkout. They will issue a receipt in English. It is likely that the US congress will pass a bill to recognize donations to Japanese charities as tax deductible.
- Medical Teams International – They are working with local Japanese partners such as Christian Relief, Assistance, Support and Hope (CRASH Japan) to provide food, water, psychosocial counseling, and other support to disaster survivors. Medical Teams International and CRASH will work with a network of Christian churches in the affected area to help the disaster victims.
- USAID – Provides a list of many different organizations operating in Japan allowing you to choose which one supports your personal interests.
